Computer Memory Check
Your computer memory is a set of chips mounted on one or more circuit
boards. Each such assembly is called a memory module.
There are different types of memory modules - Single Inline Memory
Modules (SIMMS), Dynamic RAM (DRAM),
Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDRAM),
Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR-SDRAM), and so on. See your motherboard
documentation to see what type of memory module your computer uses.
The processor of your computer uses the Random Access Memory (RAM) to
store data during processing. This type of computer memory is temporary storage - unlike your hard
drive which can store permanently.
The more RAM your computer has, the better your processor works since
it doesn't have to simulate so much storage on the hard drive.
How to Check the Amount of Memory
In order to check how much computer memory (or RAM) you have, you don't have to physically open your computer. There are several ways you can do this.
Here are two easy ways built right into the Windows operating system:
-
Run the System Information program.
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information. Click the
System Summary branch of the tree in the left pane and look for the
value of Total Physical Memory. This might be given in kilobytes.
Just divide by 1024 to change to megabytes (MB).
-
Run the System Applet in Control Panel. Click
Start-Settings-Control Panel. Look for the System Applet icon (near the
bottom, if alphabetically listed). Double click (or right click and
choose Open). Select the General tab.
In both cases, you will find that the value you see is a little less
than commonly expected. For example, 256MB may appear as 244 MB or so.
Except for Windows XP which would show you 256 MB.
The System Applet in Control Panel usually gives you extra information
too. Look for the speed and type of your processor too.
You can also use the Belarc Advisor utility. It gives you more
information than just the amount of memory installed in your computer.
