Flat Screen Computer Monitor or Flat Panel?
Anyone who debates over whether they'd prefer a flat panel over a flat
screen probably hasn't seen the LCDs; although this is unlikely.
The flat panel LCD screens not only take up far less space on your desk,
they are better for your eyes as well.
Do you get these mixed
up? A flat panel monitor is usually a liquid crystal display (LCD) device,
whereas a flat screen is a cathode ray tube (CRT) with a... flat screen.
Flat Screen
or Flat Panel - Performance vs. Price
As flat panels become more popular and affordable, the prices on flat
screen CRT's beg for attention.
One of the functions of screensaver software was to help prolong the life
of CRT computer monitors. Those concerns are not associated with the cooler LCD
screens, however these flat panel monitors are rated to have a lifespan of
around 10 years.
The CRT monitors are also better for gamers, since the refresh rates are
faster than those of LCDs. However, because of the display modes, LCD flat
panels tend to be better on the eyes.
They are more expensive to make and therefore can cost several times what
CRT monitors cost per screen size.
Check for Monitor Features
I use a 17" Viewsonic Flat Panel computer monitor. Some of the features I admire in
this monitor are its
- brightness & contrast - it gets brighter than my laptop screen
- resolution - up to 1280 x 1024 maximum
- dot pitch (CRTs) - .24 mm is good
- on-screen image display controls
- space conservation - I can pack more "stuff" on my desk...
Although I don't know whether the latter is good or bad!
If you know the features you want, it is easy to pick a monitor from the
myriad of choices that confront you.
