DSL Speed Test - Speed Matters

How do you know if your system needs a DSL speed test? If you have DSL internet service and notice slow downloads sometimes you can check your download speed.

What  if your computer takes extra long time to start up? Remember, that Windows™ has to check your DSL connection at startup. Why? Because your DSL service is always on (at least for most DSL modems I have seen).

One of the best internet speed test sites I have seen is DSL Speed test at DSL Reports. You don't only get the test results, but you can find lots of information about DSL technology.

And just in case you never knew what DSL means, you can find that out at the DSL Reports page too! Lots of information.

Other DSL Speed Check sites:

Here are a few other DSL speed test links that you can use. I have tried them all.

What if you don't have DSL Internet?

In case you do not yet have DSL, and you're tired of slow dialup modem connections, there are alternatives - such as faster dialup connections by using V.92 modem technology. Your ISP might be using the V.92 technology.

Try fine tuning your dialup modem connection. If you are not satisfied, then the next step: upgrade your modem to one that allows higher dialup speeds.

I have seen V.92 at work on a friend's computer. I was surprised at that 56K performance!

She was introduced to NetZero dialup service, which she tried. Now, this is not the ordinary horse and buggy dialup. It ran like a race horse.

My friend won't be doing a dsl speed test any time soon because she is quite happy with her dialup service now... at least, for now.

However, you may need to do a DSL speed check now, especially id if your DSL connection is performing like a tired dialup service. Actually, you shouldn't wait until you notice the drop in performance. Check periodically.

Your Network

Use DrTCP

Yes, you can do it, and...
No, you don't have to be a computer expert either.

A DSL speed test may tell you that you need to tweak your settings a bit. DrTCP - a small program does this.

Two of the settings that mostly affect your DSL speed are the RWIN and  MTU values.

RWIN is the TCP Receive Window and MTU means Maximum Transmission Unit.

RWIN is like the window through which packets of information come to your computer. If the window is too small, you have to squeeze the packets through, or drop them outside.

The information coming across your DSL line into your computer is sent in 'packets'. MTU is like the size of the packets. There must be a match between your computer and your ISP's transmission.

Does this make sense? I hope so...

You can download and try this free program. Make sure you follow the instructions given on the download page.
