How to do a hard drive data recovery on a system that doesn't boot

Suppose you accidentally formatted your hard drive or purposefully formatted it, even. Then, you remember you had some important files that you must retrieve.

Can you get the files back?

Can you do a successful hard drive repair job on a dead computer? What about resuscitating a FAT (file allocation table) that has been destroyed by a virus?

Even if you have a Windows XP crash and you cannot take over at the command line to do a system restore, you can use a good disk recovery program to bring back life to a dead PC.

If the dead PC is not due to a physical drive failure, a tried and proven software tool will help to run a hard drive data recovery successfully.

The hard drive mechanic has been resurrecting bad hard drives since 1997. Now the Gold edition tackles everything from Windows 95 and up. The Deluxe version only does 95 and 98, you should try the Gold version for systems higher than 98.

You can do a hard drive data recovery on a dead system even if this software was not installed before the problem occurred. This is cool, since few of us ever stock up on all the power tools and utilities until we need them.

Victims of crashed systems have not been scarce with their praises for this cool piece of hard drive data recovery software. Like this user from Missouri, who said,

Hi,

I usually don’t give praise easily, however ! Your software is really “unbelievable”. Although I was skeptical at first, it worked just as advertised, and even better.

It is easy to use and I recovered a XP 180 GB drive in under a half-hour; most of the time spent was looking for a mouse driver.

It certainly is refreshing to use something that really works in this day and age especially when a lot of software doesn’t.

Purchasing through the internet and downloading was also a big plus for me.

Thanks so much!

Remember that this hard drive data recovery tool is not a utility to recover deleted files. Neither would  you use it, or any software, to restore data from a drive that had been physically damaged.

Use hard drive mechanic gold if...

  • your drive has no physical damage BUT it will not boot
  • the File Allocation Table (FAT) has been erased or corrupted by a virus or accidental erasure
  • Windows XP is asking you to format your drive when you know you don't need to
  • you want to unformat a drive you formatted

This software does not work with Linux based systems anyway - only Windows. Also, if you run it on a laptop that has a 'hidden' partition that stores information when the laptop hibernates, it might report that there is an extra partition. Don't let this alarm you.

If you're paying hundreds of dollars to troubleshoot and fix a dead drive that is still physically in tact...

... if that is something you cannot afford then take the matter in your own hands.

Hard drive data recovery technology has come a long way... and so can we all.

NOTE: If your computer can boot to Windows, i.e. if you just deleted some files accidentally, read this article on how to recover deleted files. If you are still working with a hard drive on which you accidentally deleted some files, the risk of complete recovery decreases with repeated writing to the disk.
