Why do I have this slow computer with CPU usage always peaking out
at 100% capacity?
This is how one person described the problem.
"I've noticed that my CPU is running 100%
capacity. For instance when I am doing a search for a file or when
Outlook Express is open, I'm get a warning from Norton Utilities that
my CPU is using 100% of its resources. Seems to me that shouldn't be.
What's also slow is programs opening. Any ideas?"
Good news, I have not just an idea - I also have the experience...
and the solution!

Hey, I don't want to belittle the problem, but can you listen to
another helpless victim, here?
HI EXPERTS ,
I have some problem with my PC. I have a Pentium IV 2.4 GHz pc with
512 MB DDR I loaded Windows 2000 OS. I am running Adobe Photoshop,
Flash, Microsoft Office and other messenger services. When ever I open
task manager and check the CPU performance, I am getting 100% CPU
utilization message and my PC is getting hanged.
I tried changing my Motherboard, CPU as well as memory but still
the problem persists.
Is it common?.. if not how can I get rid of it? Y my pc is getting
hanged now and then.
Poor fellow. These computer specs don't suggest slowness to me.
This is a computer with muscle! So why should it be crippled -
just struggling to process your keystrokes?
Sometime ago I set up a PC for my friend - who remains nameless
(though happy, now). As a college professor of English, she was not short on
words to describe her plight. Her computer seemed to delight in
employing delay tactics as she typed.
Two to 3 seconds to display a letter when typing in Microsoft Word!
I checked for spyware on this professor's machine. I scanned for
virus, but I could not wait for these programs to run. Why?
The CPU was always laboring like a mower trying to plow through an
overgrown lawn. Everything froze on this machine, except the
Windows Task Manager utility which was always showing "CPU Usage"
at 100%.

This was a problem, a pain, and a panic - well, almost. The next
screen shows the problem. It is not something you would normally find.
The subtle and devious bug is highlighted in the picture. Note the
normal Windows file svchost.exe. Then look at the process added
by the W32/Agobot-S virus.

Do you see the 3 instances of the correct file and the bogus file
in the red oval? The first time I checked the processes running on
this machine, I did not detect the "cv" sequence of characters.
Finding and Removing the Worm
When I discovered the "bug" I knew I had to go to the registry to
disable the trigger. Since some of the other processes that were
running would not affect basic operation of Windows, I ended some of
them. Then I ran REGEDIT (Start -- Run -- then type regedit
and press Enter). I did a search for scvhost. Right-click on
the registry item and choose Modify. Be careful NOT to type svchost
(which is the "good guy"). The search found the culprit and I
renamed it. I tagged the "underscore" at the beginning of the
name. Restart the computer and this is the beautiful view I got from
the Windows Task Manager!
 Now the fever was
gone. The PC was kicking again, my English professor friend waxed
eloquently in jubilation. Now she could surf the Internet again! If
you want to find out more about this W32/Agobot-S VIRUS and how it can
cripple your computer with this bogus scvhost.exe file,
