With the recent wave of identity theft it feels a bit scary, especially
when you don't know how and when this is happening.
Advertising companies collect information about Internet computer
users' habits. The sites you visit, the products you purchase, etc.
This information helps them in tailoring their marketing towards you.
It's advertising, and many people will not mind, BUT...
- What information are they collecting?
- How can you tell if there isn't malicious intent from some websites?
- Isn't the running of programs on your computer without your
knowledge and consent an invasion of your privacy?
All these, and more, are serious questions concerning spyware.
What can you do?
Not all spyware is bad. It depends on the information they collect or
whether information is transferred without your expressed consent - which
is almost always the case. The privacy policy of the site should clearly
specify what information is being collected and what it will be used for.
If you're not satisfied with their policy, you can take extra
protective measures.
Tighten your browser security and or run a
spyware
remover or anti-spyware program to remove spyware from your computer.
These programs scan your computer and look for signs of spy software.
The spyware, adware, or trackware programs are identified from a list of
known 'culprits'.
